A film by actress Funke Akindele-Bello, popularly known as Jenifa, “Omo Ghetto” (The Saga), was declared the highest grossing film of all time in Nollywood.
A four-year record formally held by ‘The Wedding Party’ of Kemi Adetiba has been broken by the 2020 comedy film.
The 2020 comedy film has so far grossed N468,036,300 in a statement released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), after retaining the number one spot for the third week in a row.
Omo Ghetto ‘has officially broken a four-year record by knocking off the 2016 comedy film “The Wedding Party” by Kemi Adetiba.
The movie with N453,000,000 was the Nollywood Highest Grossing Movie, third place is ‘The Wedding Party 2 with N433,197,377,’ the statement said.
The latest feat of Akindele-Bellos is perhaps the most surprising news of recent times, as it comes in the midst of a pandemic that for months has devastated the film industry.
The comedy movie was released on Christmas Day 2020 and is a sequel to the 2010 ‘Omo Ghetto’ trilogy, following Shalewa aka Lefty’s tumultuous life (Funke Akindele).
Lefty (Funke Akindele) struggled between living a life of wealth and comfort provided by or returning to her ghetto lifestyle by her adopted mother.
In the dual roles of Ayomide and Left, the comedy stars Funke Akindele, Tina Mba, Adebayo Salami aka Oga Bello, Chioma Akpotha and Bimbo Thomas.
Among others, were Eniola Badmus, Deyemi Okanlawon, Zubby Michael, Mercy Aigbe, Timini Egbuson and Alex Ekubo.
