35 people were killed and 24 others injured after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s West Sulawesi province early Friday, the National Disaster Management Agency said.
Raditya Jati, the agency’s spokesman, said that the quake forced around 2,000 residences in Mamuju city and Majene district to flee home and take shelters on safer grounds.
In the quake, at least 62 homes, one health clinic and one military office were lost, Xinhua said in a text message.
Three hotels were damaged, named Maleo Hotel, the Anugrah Hotel, the Pantai Jaya Hotel and the Mitra Manakarra Hospital.
Syarifuddin S., an official of the provincial social department, told Xinhua via phone that the parliament building and the main parts of the governor’s office were destroyed.
According to the emergency agency and the search and rescue office, the evacuation of the victims and the risk assessment of the quake are ongoing.
